The top administrative positions in India are headed by the IAS, IPS, IFS and other All India Services (AIS) and Central Services officers who are selected through the UPSC CSE conducted every year. More than ten lakhs aspire for about 1000 most coveted jobs under more than 20 different cadre of services.
They are the pivots around which the administration of the District, State and the Nation revolves. They hold the most important and strategic positions throughout their career, starting as District Magistrate and reaching upto the highest administrative position of the state, that is, Chief Secretary.
Those on Central deputation are brought to various Ministries of Govt of India as Joint Secretary , rising up to important roles as Home Secretary, Defense Secretary, Finance Secretary, Foreign Secretary and so on. The highest administrative position to which an IAS officer reaches is Cabinet Secretary, who works closely with the Prime Minister and Union Ministers. The Cabniet Secretary is the main lynchpin between the PM and the Council of Ministers.
Preparation for the CSE itself is a very enriching journey, stimulating candidate’s mental abilities to the fullest. The CSE process is intended to assess the overall intellectual traits and depth of understanding of candidates rather than merely the range of their information and memory. It is likely to test the candidate’s basic understanding of all relevant issues, and ability to analyze, and take a view on conflicting socio-economic goals, objectives and demands.
UPSC CSE exposes the candidate to the vast reservoir of knowledge, opening the wider vistas of opportunities. It’s rightly called the Mother of All Examinations.
